ASUS VivoBook 15 (2024): An Honest Look
The ASUS VivoBook 15 has been a bestseller on Flipkart and Amazon India for years — and for good reason. It consistently offers competitive specs at an accessible price. But does the 2024 model still hold up against newer competition? Here's our detailed breakdown.
Who Is the VivoBook 15 For?
This laptop is designed for:
- College and school students doing coursework, assignments, and video calls
- Entry-level professionals handling Office apps, email, and presentations
- Anyone wanting a reliable daily driver without spending over ₹45,000–₹55,000
It is not designed for gaming, video editing, or heavy multitasking with 20+ browser tabs.
Design & Build Quality
The VivoBook 15 has a clean, no-nonsense design with a plastic chassis that is light (around 1.7 kg) and reasonably well-built for the price. It doesn't pretend to be a premium device — the lid has some flex under pressure and the hinge, while sturdy, isn't the buttery-smooth type you get on high-end laptops.
The hinge opens to 180 degrees flat, which is genuinely useful for sharing your screen with someone. Colour options (Silver, Indie Black, Transparent Silver) are tasteful and understated.
Display
The 15.6-inch Full HD IPS panel is a solid performer at this price. Colours are reasonably accurate, viewing angles are wide, and the anti-glare coating handles indoor lighting well. Brightness tops out at around 250–270 nits — adequate for indoor use but challenging in direct sunlight.
The bezels are slim on the sides and bottom, making the screen feel larger than it is. Overall, this is a comfortable panel for long study or work sessions.
Performance
Depending on the variant, the VivoBook 15 comes with AMD Ryzen 5 7520U or Intel Core i5 processors paired with 8–16 GB of RAM. In our experience:
- Web browsing (10–15 tabs): Smooth, no lag
- MS Office / Google Docs: Instant response
- Zoom / Google Meet: Works well with no stuttering
- Casual gaming (Minecraft, Valorant on low): Playable
- Video editing (DaVinci Resolve, Premiere): Sluggish; not recommended
The AMD Ryzen variant has slightly better integrated graphics (Radeon 610M), which helps with casual graphics tasks.
Keyboard & Trackpad
The full-sized keyboard with a numpad is a practical inclusion for those who work with numbers or spreadsheets. Key travel is decent, feedback is acceptable, and the layout is standard. The trackpad is smooth and responsive — a genuine highlight at this price point.
Battery Life
Real-world battery life with mixed usage (browsing, docs, YouTube) lands around 6–7 hours. The 42 Wh battery isn't the largest, but the efficient AMD processor helps. For a full college day, you'll want to carry the charger — especially if you're on video calls.
Charging is via a barrel plug (not USB-C), which is worth noting if you hoped to use a power bank for charging.
Connectivity & Ports
- USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 (×2)
- USB-C 3.2 Gen 1
- HDMI 1.4
- SD card reader
- 3.5mm combo audio jack
- Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0
No Thunderbolt, no USB4. Fine for the price, but worth knowing.
Verdict
The ASUS VivoBook 15 remains a reliable, value-for-money laptop for students and everyday users. It doesn't try to be something it isn't — and at its price point, that honesty is appreciated. If your needs are straightforward and your budget is tight, it's a sensible buy.
However, if you can stretch to ₹55,000–₹65,000, you'll find options with better build quality, brighter displays, and larger batteries. Know your needs, and buy accordingly.
Best For: Students, everyday users, budget-conscious buyers
Not Ideal For: Gamers, video editors, power users
